A comparative study on the gastroendoscopic findings and biopsy was performed on 149 cases with various stomach diseases in which ulcerative lesions, fungating pathology, suspicious early gastric cancer, hypertrophic gastritis and submucosal growth were included.
The results were as follows:
1. Among 40 patients whose gastroendoscopic findings suggested rather benign ulcer than malignant, 4 cases (10%) were proved as carcinoma with biopsy and 36 cases (90%) was negative for malignant cells.
2. Fourty-eight suspected advanced malignant patients were biopsied with a result of 35 (73%) positive and 13 (2.7%) negative finding.
3. Twenty-nine suspicious early gastric cancer cases were studied with the result of 15 (52%) positive and 14 (48%) negative cells.
4. One out of 5 hypertrophic, gastritis showed infiltrating singnet-ring cell adenocarcinoma and none of the 5 patients of submucosal tumor demonstrated any evidence of malignancy after biopsy.
5. Two of the 5 patients who showed polypoid lesion disclosed positive biopsy for carcinoma cells.
